Sunset tonight down on the Red River.
I have spent the last 40 years as a potter and metal sculptor. This blog is to share my work and thoughts with all who are interested.

Evil Jack
Evil jack, He puts the Punk in Punkin.
Jack wasn't picked by any of the school children who visited the pumpkin patch on their Halloween field trip. he was just too warty and ugly.
Jack's mother was the last pumpkin on the vine, by the compost pile. His father was a wild warty gourd sewing his wild pollen.Jack can't help his looks but He'll get even with those snotty brats from that school trip. He will see them in their dreams BWAAAHAHAHAHA!

Fall Work In Progress.
Back in the saddle. Even though it is 100 degrees today, fall is in my blood. The Monarch butterflies are migrating through the garden, Golden Orb and Red spiders are making great webs outside the studio and the sweet potatoes are just about ready for harvest. I just finished sculpting my first jug of the fall. I make at least one Greenman each year to celebrate summer. We have had a bountiful summer this year with cooler than normal temperatures and lots of rain. Look for him on Ebay in a week or so.

Baby Rattlesnakes And Geese In The Garden.
A beautiful Sunday morning in the garden. "Rattlesnake" is the variety of bean and it's growing great.
The Canadian geese forage on the Red River then return to our local lake to roost and nest. They fly over the house twice a day.

Obvara Firing at Raku Rendezvous in Ardmore, Ok.
Pieces fired at Raku Rendezvous Ardmore, Ok.
Bisqued and ready to fire.
Obvara fired.
Obvara firing at Raku Rendezvous in Ardmore, Ok.
Obvara is an old eastern european technique involving scalding the finish on the pottery to seal the porous surface. The bisqued piece is heated to 1500 to 1650 F., removed from the kiln and dunked into the Obvara mixture and then dunked in water to rapidly cool the piece. The pieces range from tan to almost black with speckles. The mixture consists of approx 2 pounds flour, 2 packets of yeast about 1/4 cup of sugar and about 4 gallons of water.. It is mixed and allowed to ferment about 3 days before use. it smells like beer or sourdough to me. it fits well with the raku process most potters are familiar with. The obvara mixture provides the decoration as well as the reduction of the pot. it is almost smokeless, which can be a great advantage in a city or school situation.

WHAT AM I?
WHAT AM I ? Guess what it is and I will send you a small sculpture. Obviously, this is a large, thrown jug with a wild hog sculpted on it. What will it's function be? It has no bottom and the mouth is cut all the way through the jug wall. It has numerous holes and there is a rectangle cut out of the back. Be the first to guess what it is and I'll send you a small pig sculpture. It will be a week before it's finished so you have plenty of time to figure it out. ONLY TWO GUESSES PER PERSON.
