Planted some pole beans along the garden fence today. Sugar snap peas are up and growing. The first tomatoes are in and the potatoes are ready for the first hilling. Spring is here and all's right with the world!
I have spent the last 40 years as a potter and metal sculptor. This blog is to share my work and thoughts with all who are interested.

It Don't Amount To A Hill Of Beans

Full Moon and Hobgoblin
I don't know exactly why I sculpted the Hobgoblin jug. Maybe it's the influence of the full moon. Maybe the creaking, croaking and chirping of all the new critters in the woods tonight, conjuring up images of Faeries and creatures not quite human. It was probably just the forlorn little jug sitting on the table just begging to be something more.
While I worked on him I opened the studio door and turned off the music and all but one light. I listened to the spring night sounds and imagined my Celtic ancestors sitting around a fire in Ireland, Scotland, England or Scandinavia telling stories of Spirits, Faeries and goblins good and bad.
It was satisfying to hear the wind sighing in the pines , smell the musty smell of newly turned earth in the garden and try to identify the sounds of the animals, frogs and insects in the woods.

Dawn's Early Light
Today I delivered "Dawn's Early Light" to The Great Plains 6th Annual Art Show at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. The show runs from Mar 27 thru April 24.
This sculpture is one of only a few that I have completely painted. "Dawn" starts dark at the feet and goes from purple through red and orange and finally yellow (just like sunrise) She stands 7 ft. tall.

Yay Spring!!
We had our first cabbage out of the garden this year. They were planted last fall but winter came on too fast for them to mature. They froze several times and looked terrible just a couple of weeks back. I pulled off all the damaged leaves and gave them a shot of compost tea. We had two small heads for dinner and they were sweet, tender and good.
BabyRomaine Lettuce just emerging from the ground. We planted these about a week ago.
I prepare the bed then use an empty Parmesan Cheese shaker to sprinkle the seeds on the bed then sift a little potting mix on top. It beats trying to make rows and handle each small seed.

Happy St. Patrick's Day
Shamus O'shameless, the worlds largest Leprechaun, wishes you a Happy St. Patrick's Day!
I have been going through old photos ,scaning and re-touching them to preserve them a little longer. I am surprised at how well my Photoimpact program is able to make something of photos that have turned dark and weird colors. Here is a picture taken at The Irish festival in Dallas in the early 80's

Duckhead Listed
"DUCK" is listed on ebay click here to see listing
He came out petty well. He was made of thrown stoneware parts then sculpted by hand. He's number 85 of the last 1000 jugs I will make.

Tornado Time
Tornado Time In Texas by Guy Clark
Tornado season is just beginning in this part of the country. I found this song by Guy Clark and it pretty much tells the tale. It's about Texas but we just live about two miles from Texas so it applies to us. Montague County Texas (10 mi. west of us) is where most of our tornadoes are born. Anyway, this is a great song. Give a listen.

Shotgun Boogie Man
I got a new shotgun for Christmas last year.
I decided to explore it's creative potential by blasting away at some clay.

Deciding what to make for a target was the hard part.
Some
Some
years ago I made "Dad Blasted Cactus Lamps".
I assembled thrown clay parts into cacti and blasted them w
ith Ol' Betsy. I got in trouble with environmentalists in
Ariz. for encouraging people to shoot poor defenseless cactus (it seems that it's a problem there).
A while back I was listening to some old Rock a Billy tunes
when they played "Shotgun Boogie" (Johnny Horton)
and the idea clicked. I decided to make some "Shotgun
Boogie Men" for my blasted jugs! I mean , most
people don't like the devil and even if you killed him it
would only make him mad. He's even sporting a shotgun shell
ear ring.
